The advent of single-cell sequencing has revolutionized the field of cancer genomics, opening the door to a vast number of possibilities. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a subpopulation of cancer cells with self-renewal capacity, that fuel tumor growth and contribute to the heterogeneous nature of tumors. Heterogeneity is the main hallmark of tumor cells such as CSCs, CTCs etc. Each cancer cell clone is characterized by harboring different combinations of mutations or genetic alterations, and subsequently, the processes of tumorigenesis occur differently according to the type of genetic lesions. Single-cell analysis can be used to assess the degree of CSCs heterogeneity at the single cell level and detect small subpopulations that may be missed in bulk populations.
